Cruisers, Softails and Bobbers

Cruisers are a broad category of motorcycles. These are the quintessential American motorcycles that date all the way back to the 1930s, and Harley-Davidson® has an entire family dedicated to them. The fundamental nature of a cruiser is that emphasizes a comfortable and fun riding experience above all else and looks and sounds cool doing it. Within the Harley-Davidson® lineup, Softail refers to a specific group of cruisers designed using the Softail platform. There are a number of benefits to the Softail suspension, including the look it provides but also the more comfortable ride it delivers. Both the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Street Bob® 114 and the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Fat Bob® 114 are Softail motorcycles. They’re also bobbers, which is more of a stylistic approach. Bobbers have bobbed front and rear fenders, which is where the name originates, but they also tend to be minimalistic in their designs.

Street Bob® 114

The 2022 Harley-Davidson® Street Bob® 114 is the archetypal bobber within the Harley-Davidson® lineup. In its design, H-D® engineers have taken advantage of every advancement that they have at their disposal, but it looks like a classic bobber as much as possible without coming off as an antique. It boasts bobbed fenders, upright handlebars, throwback mirrors and a peanut fuel tank. While classic bobbers were typically one-seat vehicles, the Street Bob® is a two-seater because that is the consumer preference.

Fat Bob® 114

The 2022 Harley-Davidson® Fat Bob® 114 is distinguished from the Street Bob® in two key ways. Perhaps the most notable is that Harley-Davidson® takes a more modern approach. While the classic inspiration is clearly evident, the Fat Bob® looks more modern due to the built-up nature of the design, the compact handlebars, the more aggressive muffler design and the blockier bobbed rear fender. Another way that the Fat Bob® 114 differs is that it has fatter tires, which affects the feel of the bike as well as the look.

Riding Characteristics and Performance

Both models are designed to be comfortable and fun to ride, but there are some notable differences when comparing the 2022 Harley-Davidson® Street Bob® 114 vs Fat Bob® 114. The Fat Bob® has a notably taller profile than the Street Bob®. It also has a relaxed riding position as opposed to the more stretched out riding position of the Street Bob®, and the Fat Bob® has forward foot controls whereas the Street Bob® has mid foot controls. On that front, be mindful that you can swap out the foot controls, so that it isn’t an absolute deal breaker. The Street Bob® weighs a bit more than 650 pounds wet. The Fat Bob® weighs a bit more than 670 pounds, and both are powered by the Milwaukee-Eight® 114 V-Twin engine.

Which Is the Right Bike for You

Many riders are going to gravitate toward one aesthetic or the other. If that’s the case with you, the differences in performance, feel and sound are subtle enough that there probably isn’t a strong argument to sway you. If you’re on the fence, then we strongly encourage you to test-ride both models so that you can experience those subtle differences firsthand.

Making It Yours

The Street Bob® gives you more factory design options. It has a blacked-out aesthetic. Vivid Black is the standard color scheme, but premium schemes include Gauntlet Gray Metallic, Redline Red and Fastback Blue. The Fat Bob® has a blacked-out aesthetic with a bronze-look muffler and a chrome exhaust. Vivid Black is the standard color scheme, and White Sand Pearl is the one premium option. Both of these models are minimalistic in their designs. That provides substantial opportunity for customization, and both the Street Bob® and Fat Bob® are well supported by the Harley-Davidson® catalog.
